Jean-François Canat co-founded UGGC Avocats law firm in 1993, after having spent several years in other major law firms. He is mostly involved in litigation, in matters of commercial law and art market law, this practice now being the predominant one.

Jean-François, as head of the art market law department of UGGC, provides both advice and assistance with litigation and represents many different types of clients: public institutions (ministries, public establishments), private institutions (private museums), art collectors, artists.

Jean-François is a French foreign trade adviser (Conseiller du Commerce Extérieur pour la France), a member of the ICOM legal committee and a former chairman of the IBA Art committee. Jean-François gives lectures on art law matters at the Université Paris II Panthéon-Assas among others.
