Prof Dr Stefan Engels is a partner at our Hamburg office and a member of the Media Sector Group and heads jointly with Thilo von Bodungen the German intellectual property and technology group of DLA Piper.
His consulting and litigation work is concentrated on the area of intellectual property law (including copyright, advertising and unfair competition law) and media law (freedom of expression, press, broadcasting and internet law) as well as data protection.
The main focus of Stefan’s work is advising national and international companies within the media, marketing and communications sector. He advises his clients on sales, marketing and advertising activities, new releases/product launches as well as on the protection of trade secrets and company personality rights. Stefan also represents his clients in court in connection with all of the above.
While studying law in Hamburg, Stefan worked for five years as a newsroom assistant at SAT.1 (one of the leading German broadcasting networks) and later as a research assistant at the Hans-Bredow-Institut (HBI). While there he supervised projects relating to broadcasting law (eg, on concentration control and on youth protection in the media). He gained his doctorate with a dissertation on television advertising law and he is a specialist in the field of copyright and media law.
Stefan is Deputy Chairman of the Committee of Experts for Copyright and Media Law of the Hanseatic Bar Association, visiting lecturer for e-commerce and advertising law and press law at the University of Hamburg and he lectures at the Hamburg Media School.
