Ulrich Soltész is a German qualified lawyer working at the Gleiss Lutz Brussels office since 1997. He studied at the University of Freiburg and obtained a Master of Laws degree from the Free University of Brussels. Prior to joining the firm, he worked as a research and teaching assistant at the University of Freiburg. He became a partner in 2002.

His principal practice areas are EU competition and state aid law. He has published numerous articles on competition and state aid issues and is a contributor to a number of books on these topics. He has frequently been consulted as an expert in the legislative process.

Ulrich’s recent state aid experience includes advising aid recipients and national authorities in some of the recent major state aid cases at the Commission and the European Courts in Luxemburg; his clients include, for example, the German government, General Motors, Commerzbank, AMD, shareholders of three major Landesbanken, WestLB (advisory board), Deutsche Bahn, Hypo Alpe Adria, Qimonda, Daimler, Nokia, ThyssenKrupp, E.ON, Free state of Saxony, Deutsche Post, Deutsche Telekom, BayernLB, Land Baden-Württemberg, Infineon, Land Hessen, DSGV, Linde, Bosch, and Bank Burgenland. Ulrich has also acted on behalf of third parties in many of the Commission’s landmark cases, such as WestLB, Bankgesellschaft Berlin, State guarantees for Sparkassen und Landesbanken, German public TV channels, Rover, and the financing of public hospitals. He has been involved in many transactions, especially privatisations, where state aid issues play a key role.
