Margaret A Helen Macfarlane is a special counsel in Hesketh Henry’s Litigation and Dispute Resolution Team with specialist expertise in construction law.
Helen studied English and Politics for her BA and completed a Masters in Philosophy at Auckland before studying law at Oxford. She was admitted as a barrister in London (and is a member of the Honourable Society of the Middle Temple (UK)) before she moved to New York, working as a litigation attorney for 15 years with a leading US and international law firm, Shearman and Sterling, specialising in commercial litigation and international arbitration.
Since returning to New Zealand, Helen has further developed her construction law expertise and has added New Zealand domestic arbitration to her extensive international arbitration expertise.
As an example of her work, Helen was involved in advising and representing a major multi-national engineering firm in connection with an international arbitration arising from a contract dispute relating to construction of a hydro-electric power plant in the Middle East.
