Mercedes Clavell has been a member of the Barcelona Bar Association since 1987. She has practised franchise and business law in large multinational firms and local firms. Within two-and-a-half years she was appointed general counsel of one of the biggest Spanish franchising companies (700 franchisees at the time) to prepare the company for its internationalisation. During this period, she also taught franchise and distribution law to postgraduate students from all around the world at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. In 2015 she was appointed director for Catalonia of the match-making franchise fair ‘Franquishop’, and in 2017 she became a member of the Swiss Chambers’ Arbitration Institution, to act as joint arbitrator in franchise and distribution matters. During her professional career she has advised many foreign franchisors to set up their activities in Spain (through the appointment of franchisees, master franchisees or setting up wholly owned subsidiaries), and has also advised Spanish businesses to start franchising their business model and expand internationally.
