Malek is an Arabic-qualified oil and gas lawyer. He is qualified under Civil law (i.e. as applicable in a number of Middle East jurisdictions including Iraq) and has obtained a masters degree in oil and gas law from the University of Aberdeen (2008).
Over the past 10 years, he has been involved in advising major and independent IOCs on upstream oil and gas projects in the UK, Africa and the Middle East. He has made a number of publications related to Iraqi and Lebanese hydrocarbon laws, and is regularly invited to speak on these matters at conferences and roundtable discussions in Dubai, Lebanon, Washington DC (the Aspen Institute), London and Aberdeen. He is a member of the Association of International Petroleum Negotiators and acts on the board of directors of the Energy Committee of the Beirut Bar Association.
