Rafael is partner and head of the Competition and EU Law department of Ashurst Spain. Prior to joining Ashurst, he worked at Freshfields Buckhaus Deringer and Gómez-Acebo & Pombo in Brussels, Madrid and Washington, DC.
Rafael practices all Competition law aspects with special attention to merger control, abuse of dominance, cartels, competition in regulated sectors (electricity, air transport, etc), litigation work and competition law in Latin America.
He has headed the department since 2010 and was recognised as one of the most important Spanish lawyers under the age of 40, in the 40 under Forty Awards – 2013 edition – organised by the publication Iberian Lawyer. Rafael Baena is very active in the Spanish Association of Competition Law Professionals, actively participating as a speaker in many competition law events.
Rafael has a degree in law from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid and an LLM in European Community Law from the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid. He was part of the 'Competition Team of the year 2005' for his work in the PepsiCo/Coca-Cola case, according to Legal Business.
