Christian Johnen is a senior associate in our corporate practice and is based in Düsseldorf with a track record of advising on international transactions. He focuses on the advice of multinationals, financial investors and family-owned businesses with respect to mergers and acquisitions, corporate restructuring and corporate advisory.
Christian regularly advises on corporate cross border transactions, joint ventures and corporate law issues, including complex corporate reorganisations and restructurings. Further, Christian regularly advises shareholders as well as management and supervisory boards on corporate governance and compliance. His recent experience covers regulated industries (such as telecommunications and defence), consumer products, real estate and general industries.
Christian graduated from the Westfaelische Wilhelms-Universität Münster in 2008. During his legal clerkship, Christian worked in Washington, DC. He holds a Doctor of Laws (Dr. iur.) from the Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf on the topic of Cash Pooling in Factual Business Combinations. Christian is admitted to practice in Germany.
Before joining Herbert Smith Freehills in 2016, Christian worked for a leading UK-based global law firm, was a senior associate in a leading Germany-based international law firm, and was seconded to BP Europa SE. A German native speaker, he is fluent in English and speaks French.
