Hyun Soo Joo is one of the lead partners in Lee & Ko’s International Trade practice, who has been more than 10 years’ experience working in the field of international trade law and customs in Korea providing hands-on legal expertise to clients from the public (e.g. Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade) and private sector on FTA, WTO and BITs related issues. She has broad knowledge of Korean domestic economy, with special focus on the steel, chemical and electronics industries. Throughout her career, Ms. Joo has been actively involved in many FTA negotiations and WTO disputes relating to steel, chemical and electronics industries. Especially, she has involved in KORUS FTA, Korea-EU FTA, Korea-ASEAN FTA, Korea-India CEPA, Korea-Canada FTA, KOREA-Mexico FTA, Korea-Chile FTA, and Korea-China FTA as representative of the Korean government. She has also handled WTO litigations such as Korea- Anti-Dumping Duties on Imports of Certain Paper from Indonesia, US- Anti-dumping and Countervailing Measures on Large Residential Washers from Korea and US- Anti-Dumping Measures on Certain Oil Country Tubular Goods from Korea. Ms. Joo also has extensive experience in providing trade remedy with customs advice relating to anti-dumping, subsidy, safeguard and tariff classification and provides legal advice to many Korean and multi-national corporations in Investor-State Dispute Settlement(ISDS) under many Bilateral Investment Treaties (BITs) and FTAs including those falling under the arbitration rules of the ISCID and
UNCITRAL on a wide range of industries. Most recently, she successfully served as counsel in the second ICSID claim by a foreign investor against Korea.
