Raffaele Lener is a partner in Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer’s Rome office. Raffaele was former general counsel of Assogestioni (the Italian association of investment fund managers). He joined Freshfields in 1997 before becoming a partner in 1998.
In twenty-five years in the financial sector, Raffaele has assisted with the drafting of Italian financial and banking laws and worked on the privatisation of many state-owned companies. His clients now include banks, insurance companies, financial institutions and various Italian regulatory authorities.
He was one of the commissioners in the liquidation of EFIM Group and a commissioner of Bank Sepah Iran and Banca UBAE (Libya/Italy), and is now a liquidator of Banca di Credito di Trieste and of the insurance company Assid and a member of the commission for the regulation of independent authorities.
This track record makes him highly sought after as an adviser for clients ranging from small Italian companies to foreign and multinational organisations. He is valued not just for his extensive knowledge of Italian and European regulatory requirements across the whole financial sector, but also for a sharp commercial sense that means he can distil complex legal principles down to straightforward business advice.
Membership of the European Commission’s legal certainty group, set up to help the European Commission regulate clearing and settlement, reflects his standing in European legal circles and his knowledge of the latest trends in European regulatory requirements.
