Prof Dr Karsten Metzlaff is a partner of the international partnership Noerr LLP. He studied law at the Universities of Münster and Hamburg (Germany), as well as in Lausanne (CH) and London (UK). He worked at the European Commission in Brussels for Directorate Competition where he mainly dealt with franchising matters. Since then he has specialised in the field of German and European franchise law.
As a lawyer, he has, over the years, advised on the structure of a number of well-known national and international franchising systems and the expansion of those systems nationally and internationally. Clients which have been advised by Noerr LLP in the franchise area are, eg, McDonald’s (since more than 20 years), Hugo Boss, Whirlpool and Engel & Völkers. Karsten Metzlaff has been named in the latest JUVE edition (2011/2012) on German law firms as one of the leading attorneys in the country in this field. He has been selected again for inclusion in The International Who’s is Who of Business Lawyers, Franchise (2012).
Dr Metzlaff is a member of the German Franchise Association (DFV) and its Legal Committee, of the International Franchise Association (IFA) and the German Anti trust Law Association (Studienvereinigung Kartellrecht). He has also lectured on many various domestic and international issues of franchising and distribution law. He is the author of several published texts in relation to franchising, for example he is the editor and author of the “Franchising Handbook” (Beck publishers, 2005).
