Dr Abell is co-head of the Franchising and Licensing practice at the European law firm Field Fisher Waterhouse. He specialises in the re-engineering of retail and F&B businesses. He is highly rated as a leader in his field by both The Legal 500 legal directory and An International Who's Who of Franchise Lawyers (Law Business Research). He has been named "the Guru of franchising" in the Chambers legal directory which also rated him as the UK's number one franchising lawyer. Mark's doctorial thesis was on the regulation of international franchising. He has acted as an expert on franchising to both the WIPO and WTO.
Mark acts for a large number of household names and has broad experience of internationalising retail businesses through a wide variety of structures in all parts of the world particularly India, China, the Middle East, South East Asia and Europe. He is a Japanese speaker and has worked several years in Japan, China and Malaysia.
Mark is co-editor of the International Franchise Law Journal and a member of the editorial board of Franchise Law and Business Alert.
Mark has written eight books on franchising. They include; The Regulation of Franchising in the EU, The Franchise Option, European Franchising, The International Franchise Option, Franchising in India, The WIPO publication on Franchising and Alternative Corporate Re-engineering. He is the author of and currently edits the Butterworths Encyclopedia of Precedents Volume on Franchising. Mark has had countless articles published in journals including Trade Mark World, Franchise World, Business Franchise Magazine, Franchise Business and Law Alert and Managing Intellectual Property.
