The Mediation Center in Craiova was founded as a pilot centre by the Ministry of Justice through the intermediary of Craiova First Instance Court and Craiova Tribunal with the support of the United States Embassy in Romania and Dolj Bar Association, by the Order no. 1391/C/2003 of the Ministry of Justice.
The purpose of the center is to offer an alternative dispute resolution method and to unburden a part of the high caseload registered in the Romanian courts. The Mediation Center in Craiova has also an important role in mediation training and the implementation of mediation in Romania.
The Mediation Center in Craiova started its activity in November 2003 when it was referred the first cases from Craiova First Instance Court and Craiova Tribunal.
The Association the Mediation Center in Craiova was founded on the 14th of August 2003 and its main purpose is to support the activity of the Mediation Center in Craiova.
Starting with February 2009, the Association the Mediation Center in Craiova was declared as a public utility organisation by the governmental order no. 103/2009.
The CMC panelists have an active role in the development of mediation in Romania. There are over 100 specialised neutrals that are actively involved in mediation and in promoting this field. Four members of the center representing were part of the first Mediation Council. Together with their colleagues, they designed and implemented the Romanian mediation regulations and thus creating the legal environment for mediation to happen in Romania.
