According to a study by Ernst & Young LLP, 2016 saw US$132.5 billion in IPO proceeds raised globally in 1,055 transactions, a decrease from 2015 of 33 per cent and 16 per cent, respectively. There were also fewer megadeals – only 21 transactions with IPO proceeds greater than US$1.0 billion occurred in 2016, compared with 35 in the prior year. Notwithstanding the prior disappointing year, 2017 has got off to a healthy start with the most active first quarter since 2007, with 369 IPOs raising US$33.7 billion in global IPO proceeds, a year-over-year increase of 92 per cent and 146 per cent, respectively.
