The maritime migration crisis

The number of migrants attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea has shown no sign of slowing down in the past year. The humanitarian crisis for search and rescue authorities based on the Mediterranean coast and for the international shipping industry continues, with the United Nations Migration Agency (IOM) reporting that, as at 2 June 2017, there were 71,080 Mediterranean-sea arrivals since the beginning of 2017, with approximately 1,778 of those feared missing or dead. IOM estimates that, in 2016, there were approximately 362,753 migrants arriving in the Mediterranean, with the number of recorded deaths being 5,098.
